Non c’è un altro artista che incarni l’America reale, quella dei sogni e delle contraddizioni, come Bruce Springsteen. Nato a Long Branch, New Jersey, il 23 settembre 1949, Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen ha trasformato la cronaca quotidiana della working class in epica moderna. Soprannominato “The Boss” – un titolo conquistato più che scelto, perché dietro quella figura da capo carismatico si nasconde il leader di una comunità di musicisti, la E Street Band, con cui ha scritto alcune delle pagine più intense della musica rock – Springsteen è da oltre mezzo secolo un’icona capace di rinnovarsi senza tradire la sua natura (continua nella Biografia).

Biografia

(Prosegue dall’Introduzione) Il suo esordio, nel 1973, con Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. e The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, fu accolto con entusiasmo dalla critica ma non dal grande pubblico. Fu Born to Run, due anni dopo, a cambiare tutto: un album che suona come un romanzo on the road, fatto di fughe e speranze, con un linguaggio poetico che non aveva nulla da invidiare ai grandi cantautori folk americani. Con Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978) e The River (1980), Springsteen affinò quella scrittura cinematografica che racconta la lotta dell’uomo comune tra rabbia e desiderio di riscatto. Nebraska (1982), registrato in solitudine su un quattro piste, rivelò il suo lato più oscuro e minimalista. Ma fu con Born in the U.S.A. (1984) che divenne un fenomeno planetario: sette singoli in Top 10, un album che sfiorò le trenta milioni di copie vendute e un tour epocale che consacrò i suoi concerti come riti collettivi, spesso superiori alle quattro ore di musica.

Springsteen è un cantautore che non ha mai temuto di reinventarsi. Negli anni ’90, dopo la parentesi più intima di Human Touch e Lucky Town, tornò a parlare d’America con The Ghost of Tom Joad, un lavoro che univa cronaca sociale e suggestioni letterarie. Dopo l’11 settembre, The Rising (2002) fu il disco che più di ogni altro seppe dare voce al dolore e alla resilienza di un intero paese. Negli anni successivi, Bruce ha alternato lavori in studio – dal folk di Devils & Dust al vigoroso Wrecking Ball (2012) – a tour sold out in tutto il mondo, confermando uno standard di eccellenza dal vivo che pochi altri artisti hanno saputo mantenere. Fino al recente Only the Strong Survive (2022), una dichiarazione d’amore alla soul music.

Ma ciò che rende Bruce Springsteen una figura realmente unica nella storia della musica contemporanea è il modo in cui ha saputo fondere la dimensione popolare della canzone rock con una profondità letteraria che affonda le radici nella grande tradizione narrativa americana. I suoi testi sono spesso veri e propri racconti brevi in forma di ballata: storie di operai, disoccupati, sbandati, coppie ai margini, madri e padri che combattono contro il disincanto. Una “working class poetry” capace di evocare in pochi versi lo stesso pathos che si ritrova nelle pagine di John Steinbeck, di cui The Ghost of Tom Joad – ispirato direttamente a Furore – è il più esplicito tributo.

Springsteen ha sempre avuto una visione della musica come veicolo etico oltre che espressivo. Nei suoi versi si sente l’eco di Walt Whitman, nella volontà di abbracciare le moltitudini dell’America e di cantarne non solo la gloria, ma soprattutto le ferite. E si avverte l’influenza sotterranea di Jack Kerouac, nella fascinazione per l’asfalto come orizzonte esistenziale, nel viaggio come fuga e ricerca. La trilogia ideale composta da Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town e The River è, in questo senso, un’epopea moderna scritta per chitarra e tamburi, un romanzo musicale della giovinezza che si scontra con la vita adulta e i suoi compromessi.

Anche quando assume una forma più cruda e spoglia, come in Nebraska o Devils & Dust, il suo songwriting non perde densità, ma guadagna un’intensità quasi biblica, fatta di simboli, silenzi e colpe ataviche. Springsteen non racconta mai semplicemente “cosa succede”, ma cosa resta, nelle vite che descrive. La sua voce – roca, empatica, nuda – è il filo che lega il lirismo privato alla cronaca pubblica, il dolore individuale alla frattura collettiva.

In questo senso, Bruce Springsteen è stato ed è ancora oggi un romanziere del rock, capace di costruire album come mondi narrativi coesi, in cui ogni canzone è un capitolo di un’opera più grande. Un autore che ha saputo incarnare, come pochi, l’invisibile distanza tra l’American Dream e la realtà di chi quel sogno l’ha solo sfiorato. Ed è proprio in questo spazio – tra ciò che si spera e ciò che si sopporta – che abita tutta la sua grandezza.

Nella storia della canzone d’autore, Bruce Springsteen occupa un posto d’onore al fianco dei grandi interpreti del Novecento, da Bob Dylan a Leonard Cohen, da Jacques Brel a Fabrizio De André. Ma la sua peculiarità sta nell’aver costruito un linguaggio capace di fondere il lirismo poetico con l’impatto viscerale del rock’n’roll, senza mai perdere di vista l’uomo comune e le sue battaglie. È per questo che il suo repertorio ha superato ogni confine, geografico e generazionale: perché nelle sue canzoni ognuno può trovare una ferita da riconoscere, un amore da rimpiangere, un sogno da inseguire. E ogni volta, dietro la voce del Boss, risuona quella della coscienza collettiva.
