“L’ultima canzone dell’album è sui due opposti. Un Leonard vuole andare fuori città, e l’altro Leonard vuole restare dove si soffre… le ultime parole che sentiamo, dice il recensore, sono parole di sfida che continua, e con un tocco di ironia, Leonard dice a se stesso “smettila di trascrivere tutto”. Per cui ci sono due canzoni, la prima e l’ultima, sui due lati di Leonard, due Cohen… anche se Different Sides non è di così facile lettura (dice anche “baby”, ci sono altri indizi che fanno pensare che si confronti con un’amante donna, – ho pensato inizialmente che fosse Anjani che voleva “restare dove si soffre” e che LC ironicamente volesse “andare fuori città” -) anche questa perfetta ultima canzone, come pure altre, in particolare Come Healing o Show Me The Place, ci fa decisamente identificare Old Ideas come l’album dell’addio… così, finisce con una canzone battagliera con il suo arrangiamento da marcia militare”.

“And the very last song of album then is the opposite – one Leonard wants get out of town, and other Leonard wants to stay where suffering is… The last words we hear, says the reviewer, are the words of continuing fight, and little irony, Leonard saying to himself “stop writing everything down”. So basically we have two songs, the first and the last, about two sides of Leonard, two Leonard Cohens… Even if Different Sides is not exactly so easy to read that was (after all, he says “baby”, and many clues tell it is about female lover and their exchange, and my first thought was it’s Anjani who wants stay where suffering is, and LC being little more ironic, “wants get outta town”), it is still the perfect last song as any other song – particularly Come Healing or Show Me the Place – would dictate our understanding of Old Ideas as the farewell album… This way, it ends with fighting song and its military march arrangements“.

“Come diverse altre canzoni, anche qui sembra ad una prima analisi che ci si riferisca alla relazione con una donna, in tono anche un po’ umoristico. Le “Regole da rispettare” fanno pensare alla religione. Mi piacciono sia le melodie che gli arrangiamenti: è un modo consono di chiudere questo album che contempla luce ed oscurità nello stile unico ed emozionante di Cohen”.
