“Bob Dylan ha influenzato il mio modo di comporre. Prima che arrivasse Bob Dylan non c’era nessuno che scrivesse la verità, nessuno scriveva della verità come la percepiva. Tutti scrivevano quello che pensavano il pubblico volesse sentire, la gente diceva allora, ragazzi, ora ci piacciono le canzoni sulla morte, e allora loro scrivevano canzoni sulla morte e musica pop e la gente ne era entusiasta. Dylan arrivò con le canzoni d’amore, amore e basta ed erano, come dire, spesso erano canzoni romantiche, quella è stata la rivoluzione, tu potevi dire la tua verità e la potevi dire nel modo in cui la volevi dire. Per me, quando Dylan è arrivato si è aperta la strada per The sound of silence. Dylan ha reso possibile ad un grande gruppo di nuovi artisti di uscire alla ribalta. Credo che non sarei qui se non fosse stato per Dylan!”.
Di se stesso, nella medesima intervista, Simon dice: “C’è differenza tra essere uno che scrive canzoni ed essere un poeta, solo a volte i due ruoli si incrociano. Quando scrivo una canzone la scrivo perché possa essere cantata, non letta ad alta voce o in silenzio ma per cantarla, e questo mette dei limiti alle parole. Non ti interessa come si presenta sulla carta? Certo che mi interessa, posso farmi un’idea di come sarà una volta trasferita sulla carta ma non sempre sei così fortunato che le parole della canzone faranno la stessa riuscita, e quando le guardi sulla carta non ti sembrano granché. Facciamo l’esempio di alcune canzoni dei Beatles, Sgt Peppers, quante di loro, dando un’occhiata alle parole sul retro, non dicono niente. Ma quando vengono cantate, When I’m sixtyfour ad esempio, sono nella autentica dimensione che chi le ha scritte intendeva. Quindi, non penso, non mi considero alla stregua di un poeta”.

“Bob Dylan was an influence on my writing. Before Bob Dylan came around there was nobody who was writing of the truth, nobody was writing what they perceived this truth. Everyone was writing what they thought the audience wanted to hear, people said well, kids, it’s time of death songs, so they wrote death songs and pop music and people would die in it. Dylan came out on love songs by themselves and they were, you know, often they were romantic songs, that was the revolution, that you could say the truth and you could say it in the way that you wanted to say it. For me, when Dylan put that down that made it possible for The sound of silence to be ahead. Dylan made it possible for a whole group of new artists to come on to the scene. I just think I wouldn’t have been here if it wasn’t for Dylan!
There’s a difference between being a song writer and a poet, perhaps they cross occasionally. When I’m writing a song I’m writing it to be sung, not to be read aloud or silently but to be sung, that puts limitation on your words. You don’t care on how it looks on paper? Well, yes I care, I can imagine that it will come out, you know, so far on paper but not all the times your fun is that the words in your song will really make it and when you look at them on the paper they do not make this much. Take a look of some of the Beatles songs, as Sgt Pepper words, how many, just look at the words on the back, doesn’t look like much, but when they’re sung, When I’m sixtyfour that’s the other dimension that was intended by the writer. So, I don’t think that I don’t consider myself to be a poet”.
