“You Better Move On è un brano di Arthur Alexander, da lui pubblicato nel 1961 come singolo, con al lato B A Shot of Rhythm and Blues, che arrivò alla 24ª posizione di Billboard. I Rolling Stones inclusero una versione del brano sul loro eponimo EP del 1964, ed in seguito sull’album December’s Children (And Everybody’s) dell’anno seguente. Apparve successivamente in numerose altre raccolte. Billy “Crash” Craddock pubblicò You Better Move On su un singolo del 1971. Arrivò alla 10ª posizione della classifica country. Ringo Starr registrò una versione del pezzo durante le sedute di registrazione di un album a Memphis, poi rimastro irrealizzato. Nella stessa occasione, vennero registrate altre quindici canzoni, tra cui I Can Help, Some Kind Of Wonderful, Beat Patrol, Ain’t That a Shame, Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day e Whisky and Soda. Il drummer, che però non riuscì a suonare la batteria nelle sessions era ancora pesantemente alcolizzato, e lasciò perdere l’album fino a quando la CSR Records volle pubblicarlo. Allora, Starr fece un’ingiunzione, ed, in un tribunale di Atalanta, si bloccò la pubblicazione del disco, ma Ringo dovette pagare il produttore, Chips Moman, per le registrazioni effettuate. Ugualmente, l’LP apparve, assieme ad altro materiale, fra cui il discorso dell’ex-beatle al processo, su un bootleg, chiamato Go Cat Go, in Minnesota nel 2003, ma giunsero copie d’importazione anche in Gran Bretagna”.

“You Better Move On is a song by Arthur Alexander from 1961 that reached #24 on the US charts in March 1962. It was covered in 1962 by Bobby Vee and then by both The Hollies and The Rolling Stones in 1964. The lyrics were inspired by Alexander’s real life situation, in which his girlfriend and future wife already had a boyfriend. Alexander said of the situation “When I met her out of high school he was still hanging in there. His family was pretty well off. I didn’t have no money but I knew she liked me. It was a small town and people would be talking. That’s where I got the idea for the song. I didn’t talk to him personally. I said it in song”. The song was recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The session musicians on the recording included David Briggs, piano, Terry Thompson, guitar, Forest Riley, acoustic guitar, Norbert Putnam, bass, Jerry Carrigan, drums and unknown back up singers. Music critic Toby Creswell included “You Better Move On” as one of the 1001 great songs of all time”.
