“Tiny Dancer è una delle più famose canzoni scritte e interpretate da Elton John, con testo di Bernie Taupin. È inclusa nell’album Madman Across the Water, del 1971. La canzone è dedicata a Maxine Feibelman, la prima moglie di Taupin; il titolo significa letteralmente “piccola ballerina”. La melodia vocale, molto dolce, è sostenuta dalle complesse architetture armoniche del pianoforte di Elton John, ed è arricchita dal vivace suono delle percussioni e della chitarra pedal steel, suonata da B. J. Cole. Ad accompagnare Elton John non c’è una band vera e propria, che si formerà poco più tardi, piuttosto vengono messi in evidenza quotati e abili session men più o meno noti nel panorama musicale inglese dell’epoca, oltre a dieci abili cantanti di sottofondo che si fanno ben sentire soprattutto durante il ritornello. Gli arrangiamenti di Paul Buckmaster e la sezione di archi completano il tutto; è oggi considerata come un capolavoro che rasenta la perfezione stilistica. Fu pubblicata come singolo il 7 febbraio 1972, e fu spesso trasmessa alla radio, nonostante la sua durata (6:17, un tempo lunghissimo e veramente inusuale). All’inizio non ebbe molto successo (raggiunse il 41º posto nella classifica americana), poi, lentamente, andò insinuandosi nella cultura popolare, ed è oggi tra i successi più noti dell’intero repertorio di John. Apparsa in numerosissime raccolte e compilation della rockstar, è al 397º posto nella lista delle 500 migliori canzoni di tutti i tempi secondo il Rolling Stone.
Il brano è stato messo in evidenza nel 2005, alla Freemont Street Experience di Las Vegas; è apparso anche nel film Aloha, Bobby And Rose del 1975. È stato citato in una puntata della nota serie americana Friends, mentre è stato inserito come brano trainante nel film di Cameron Crowe Quasi famosi, ottenendo un grande rilancio in America (una ripresa strumentale della canzone si può udire alla fine del film; a suonarla è Nancy Wilson degli Heart). Tiny Dancer appare ancora nel gioco Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol Encore. Viene inoltre citata nella serie televisiva Scrubs e appare nell’ultimo episodio della commedia britannica Roman’s Empire. Di Tiny Dancer esistono numerosissime cover di altri artisti; tra le più famose, spiccano le versioni di Lani Hall (nei primi anni ’70), di John Frusciante (nel 1990 a Pinkpop, nel 1999 a Woodstock e nel 2004 al Rock Am Ring), di Dave Grohl (nel The Late Late Show con Craig Kilborn), di Ben Folds (nel suo album del 2002 Ben Folds Live) e di Tim McGraw (nel 2002, nel suo album Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors) Inoltre, la canzone è stata cantata anche da un gruppo di adolescenti in High School Musical: Get in the Picture“.

“Tiny Dancer is a 1971 song by Elton John with lyrics by Bernie Taupin. It appears on John’s fourth album, Madman Across the Water, and was released as a single in 1972. In the U.S. it was certified Gold on 19 May 2005, and Platinum on 19 August 2011 by the Recording Industry Association of America. In the UK, “Tiny Dancer” has been certified Silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for sales of 200,000 copies, despite never being released as an official single. The song’s lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin to capture the spirit of California in 1970 encapsulated by the many beautiful women he met there. The song was dedicated to Maxine Feibelman—Taupin’s first wife—on the album Madman Across the Water.
The song features a piano-based melody during verses and an arrangement that at the start features pedal steel guitar and light percussion but, shifting subtly halfway through one of the choruses, by the end is driven by Paul Buckmaster‘s dynamic strings, along with a barely heard backing choir. Due to the song lacking a hook, “Tiny Dancer” was initially a non-starter as a single in the US, reaching only #41 on the U.S. pop chart, and was not even released as a single in the UK. The song fared better in Canada, where John had much of his early commercial breakthrough success, peaking at #19. It was also a hit in Australia, peaking at #13. Eventually, the song slowly became one of John’s most popular songs even in the territories that initially failed to embrace it, and the full-length version is now a fixture on North American, UK and Australian adult contemporary and rock radio stations. It was ranked No. 397 on the 2010 List of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
In May 2017, an official music video for “Tiny Dancer” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival as a winner of Elton John: The Cut, a competition organized in partnership with AKQA, Pulse Films, and YouTube in honour of the fiftieth anniversary of his songwriting relationship with Bernie Taupin. The competition called upon independent filmmakers to submit treatments for music videos for one of three Elton John songs from the 1970’s, with each song falling within a specific concept category. “Tiny Dancer” was designated for the live-action category, with the competition won by Max Welland. The video was filmed in Los Angeles, and features scenes of various residents driving around the city”.
